There are five categories of buildings in Edgeworld, although Kabam claims that Defense buildings really aren't buildings, even though they are listed as buildings, are built as buildings, and are affected by building boosts such as the 99% Accelerator. This clarification was made to avoid having to pay out prizes for the level 22 build-a-thon event when players realized it was shorter to upgrade turrets than to upgrade other buildings. This is just a furtherance of their scamming.
